Why Dry Air?

A compressor takes in atmospheric air loaded with contaminants and moisture. At 75°F/23.9°C and 75% relative humidity, a 500 SCFM/850 NM³/HR air compressor takes in about 90 gallons/340.6 liters of water in vapor form during a 24-hour period. An aftercooler condenses about half. As the air flows from the compressor into the distribution lines, it cools. The vapor condenses causing rust, scale, and ultimately leaks in pipes, valves, instruments, and air-operated tools and equipment. Moreover, when exposed to freezing temperatures, the moisture in air lines will freeze and restrict air flow. A typical PIONEER dryer pays for itself in less than a year by reducing and eliminating maintenance costs and downtime.

Activated AluminaThe high performance, -100°F Activated Alumina Plus is standard in PIONEER Regenerative dryers. It is available in 1/8", 3/16", and 1/4" sizes and shipped in 40 lb. mini-drums or 50 lb. bags.

Heatless Regenerative Dryers

The PIONEER PHL and SHL Series, extremely simple and efficient in design, use dry compressed air for regeneration. The hard, attrition-resistant activated alumina is contained in two towers. While the compressed air is being dried in one tower, the desiccant in the other tower is reactivated. For regeneration of the desiccant, a small amount of the dried air (from the drying tower) is expanded to near atmospheric pressure in the regenerating tower. The dry air becomes super dry on expansion and readily adsorbs the moisture from the saturated desiccant bed. Because these dryers do not require a heater or blower and use counter-flow regeneration, they offer maximum reliability. Desiccant replacement every few years is about the only maintenance cost. Dewpoints down to -100°F/- 73.3°C are attainable.

demand cycleDiagnostic Control Panel

The Diagnostic Control Panel provides more precise dewpoint control, adds diagnostic capability and improves reliability. It indicates the sequence of operation for both towers. The on/off switch, power on light and the failure to shift alarm are also included. The NEMA 4 control panel is standard in PHL and HDS series dryers. It is also standard in SHL series dryers with Demand Cycle Control.

Demand Cycle Control (Optional)

To save on purge loss and energy, you may control your dryer by sensing exit air dewpoint in lieu of timecycle. The demand cycle control reduces purge loss in proportion to air usage and moisture content. Demand cycle control is available with PDM Universal (standard) or PDM Ultra (optional) sensor.

Advantages:

  1. Better Sensors -Both PDM Ultra and PDM Universal use high-capacitance aluminum oxide sensor. The PDM Universal sensor is water resistant, allowing for reliable performance in wetter environments. Both sensors are protected with a prefilter and adsorber.
  2. Installation - Sensor is installed at a cleaner location and protected at inlet and outlet.
  3. Easy Calibration - Designed for convenient and inexpensive calibration at job site.
  4. More Reliable - Less frequent tower switching means longer component and desiccant life.
  5. Better Dewpoint Control - By reading the exit air dewpoint the sensor also monitors
    the dewpoint of outgoing air.
  6. Cost Savings Example:

    If the average flow is 500 SCFM at 100 PSIG and 100°F inlet, the regeneration cost with demand cycle = (70 / 4.5) x (0.746) x 24 x 0.07 = $19.50 a day

Savings = $39.00 - $19.50/day or approximately $7000/year. Pay back less than six months

Dewpoint Analyzer : Supplied with filter, two isolation valves, exhaust coil, adsorber and visual moisture indicator, sensor holder and cable.

Note : When selecting dryers, compare pressure dewpoints (PDP). Atmospheric dewpoint (ADP) has little practical value in selecting compressed air dryers because compressed air is under pressure.
