Why Dry Air?

A compressor takes in atmospheric air loaded with contaminants and moisture. At 75°F/23.9°C and 75% relative humidity, a 500 SCFM/850 NM3/HR air compressor takes in about 90 gallons/340.6 liters of water in vapor form during a 24-hour period. An aftercooler condenses about half. As the air flows into the distribution lines, it cools. The vapor condenses causing rust, scale, and ultimately, leaks in pipes, valves, instruments, and air-operated tools and equipment. A typical PIONEER dryer pays for itself in less than one year by reducing and eliminating maintenance costs and downtime.

How Does It Work?

In the PIONEER Refrigerant Dryer (R30A/W [ADR 15A/W] and larger), the warm, moist air enters the air-air heat exchanger where it is precooled by outgoing cool air. This precooling allows the use of a smaller refrigeration unit and lowers the cost of drying. Cooling the precooled air to a 35°F/2°C range is performed by the air-refrigerant heat exchanger and the refrigeration system. Cooling causes condensation which is separated by a highly efficient centrifugal separator and drained by automatic drains.

The dry cold air then flows through the air-air heat exchanger where it is reheated by the incoming warm air. Reheating increases the actual air volume. The reheating also prevents sweating in air lines downstream.

Air-Air Heat Exchanger Benefits:
Reduces power usage approximately 50 and increases useful volume and energy content by 10-20%. A 100 SCFM PIONEER Refrigerant dryer with Air-Air Heat Exchanger can save around $200 yearly in energy costs. Air-Air Heat Exchanger is standard in models R30A/W (ADR15A/W) and larger.

Patented All-Copper Triple Tube Heat Exchangers

Advantages (Standard R75A/W [ADR40A/W] - R5000A/W [ADR2500A/W])*

    1.    10-year prorated heat exchanger warranty

     2.    Two out of three tubes provide heat transfer surface instead of one out of two in a conventional heat exchanger.

     3.    Lower and more consistent dew points because of the dual-pass design

     4.    Compact heat exchanger and system design

     5.    Rust and corrosion free

     6.    Lower pressure drops

* Shell and tube design, R6250A/W and larger

PIONEER Quality Features

    1.    10-year prorated compressor warranty

    2.    10-year prorated heat exchanger warranty

    3.    Performance Monitor with 10-year prorated warranty

    4.    Micro Monitor & Controller - standard from R75 to R235, available in other sizes. Analog controller monitors six key temperature

readings and allows easy, convenient setting of your timer drain

    5.    Removable insulation

    6.    Electric Automatic Drain - adjustable open and close times, memory, a cleanable strainer, and an isolation valve are standard

            (except in R10A/W and R15A/W)

    7.    Two electric drains are standard in R800A/W (ADR400A/W) and larger

    8.    Lower dew points

    9.    Efficient centrifugal separator

    10.  Easy Access Cabinets - standard up to R1200A/W (ADR600A/W) and optional in larger sizes

    11.  Customized control panel - NEMA 1 standard, NEMA 4, 7, or 12 and custom control panels available

    12.   Lower pressure drops - in a typical 100 PSIG/6.89 BAR G compressed air system, 2 PSIG/0.14 BAR G less pressure drop saves

1% in energy costs. The low pressure drop is inherent in PIONEER's triple tube design.

    13.  Compact Design - the triple tube design reduces floor space requirements and shipping costs. Also, the air-air heat exchanger

reduces refrigeration horsepower and dryer size.

Save Up to 75% Energy
Larger PIONEER dryers are equipped with a thermostatic expansion valve and hot gas by-pass valve saving up to 50% in energy costs at no load. And, models R2500A/W (ADR1250A/W) through R4500A/W (ADR2250A/W) are built with two compressors. This optional feature allows one compressor to be turned off, saving 50% in energy costs. The second compressor can be unloaded, saving up to 75% in energy costs.

Dewpoint
Tests show the actual dew point to be lower than the evaporator temperature. As a stream of air hits the cold refrigerant surface, some of it is cooled to temperatures lower than the mean air temperature in the evaporator.

 Cycling/Chiller Design

All systems available in a chiller design, replacing the air to refrigerant heat exchanger with an air to fluid heat exchanger. A refrigerant to fluid heat exchanger and a circulation pump are added to the system. The refrigeration cools the cooling fluid, which then cools the compressed air. The cooling fluid is circulated through an expansion tank, air to fluid heat exchanger and refrigerant to fluid heat exchanger by a pump. A cycling dryer may save on energy usage. For more information, ask your distributor for the PIONEER Cool Mass Chiller brochure.
